Surfing the Cosmic Waves

Get in rhythm and strengthen your balance for health and well-being. Find joy in living and tap into your innate vitality

Our first topic is you as an individual: your motivations, your body, your thoughts, your emotions. Even though you may go with your friends to the beach, when it comes down to it surfing is all about you and your ability to ride the waves, testing your balance, agility and courage.

1. Learning to Swim

One step at a time: before even trying to surf, you have to learn how to swim - you have to enjoy going into the water, be able to hold your breath and learn some basic strokes. Swimming in the Living Cosmos means being able to connect with your inner world, to exercise your imagination, intuition and ideals so you can move around in the waves of energy that come from other people and from the Cosmos without losing center. Water represents emotions and feelings, both personal and collective. To navigate what you are feeling, you need air, symbolizing the need for objectivity, keeping things in perspective and knowing yourself well enough to know when to come up for air when emotions are turning negative or are overwhelming you.

One of the most widely practiced, simple, yet profound techniques for staying centered in this way is meditation, also known as guided visualization. Please see our Guide to the The Inner Journey if you would like some suggestions about how to do this successfully. An essential part of successful inner work is making sure you are in harmony with your body and environment: good nutrition, excercise and sleep and a safe, non-distracting environment.

2. Finding Balance

Once you have learned to swim, you are ready to surf - in our metaphor, this means playing with different ways to get the most out of the Cosmic Waves. This means exercising your creativity and finding out what resonates with you, what excites you. As each of us discovers our true gifts and shares them with the rest of us, we are all much happier.

So let's get to it: the first step is to find balance. On one side are my Ideals and Intuition, giving me a sense of inner orientation that keeps me centered no matter what waves I ride. On the other side is the daily practice of putting my inner directives into practice. The Truth of my Ideals is measured in how I apply them to my own life and all my interactions. Walking the talk, as they say.

3. Hit the Waves

To help you get started or to keep going on this journey, this site will present individuals or ideas that are inspiring and helping people with a minimum of self-justification and self-glorification. These are like practice waves, ones that are not too intense or powerful, ones that help you stay in balance with yourself even as you open your mind to other realities. Every system of thought you try out and every group you participate in, here and elsewhere, is a chance for you to try out your surfing skills. More intense individuals and transformational groups are like bigger waves, requiring more skill on your part to stay connected to your own core principles so you wont get swallowed up by their momentum.

4. Surfing with Astrology

The idea of this site came about as I was preparing to make an Astrology site that would provide a framework for interaction among people of all ages and characteristics. When I first began studying Astrology years ago, I realized that the way we connect Astrological time with human experience is an open topic, as widely varied as deciding whether to use physics to build a safer automobile or to launch a missile. So I wanted to start people's exploration of Astrology by helping them to tune into their what they care about and the ideals and symbols that they are already relying on and then connect that information with the timing the Cosmic Clocks provide. This is one of the core premises of Living Astrology.

So how can Astrology help you surf the Living Cosmos? And how can it help you to know yourself better? Astrology can help you to navigate life's challenges using the grand metaphor of the Solar System to think big and invoke your inner wisdom. Transits can help you tune into changing circumstances and figure out how to integrate them into your core sense of Purpose. Astrology is a holistic system of knowledge that integrates the precision of math and science with the relevance of art and popular culture. The science part is that we use the positions of the planets to track a unique form of psychologically based time. The art part is that the Astrological archetypes help you to connect with the symbols and characters of your inner world as well as trends in our collective culture. All systems of knowledge are ways of reminding yourself what you already know and helping you to attune the Universal forces. Astrology is one of these.

So let's introduce you to the cast of characters that will amuse, entertain and help you to understand yourself and those you care about. You choose which ones to feature and how it all fits together.
