Arthur M Young - Inventor and Spiritual Pioneer
Arthur was the lead inventor of the Bell Helicopter and later in his life, an author of numerous books. I had the good fortune to meet him and do one of the last interviews with him before he passed in 1995 due to the intercession of my friend Tom Mellett.
Here are the highlights:
1. Arthur was a prolific inventor - I got to visit his workshop in Pennsylvania and watch him fly one of his early prototypes of his Bell helicopter.
2. Arthur authored numerous books of which "The Geometry of Meaning" and "The Reflexive Universe" are the most well know. He combines the precision and structure of a scientist with the soul of philospher and spiritual explorer.
3. His "Theory of Process" is a unique combination of mathematics and spiritual philosophy that is challenging and mind expanding.
My responses:
1. Besides being a kid in a candy store seeing his workshop and early helicopter prototype, I resonated with his specific contribution to the science of flight - the Bell helicopter essentially solved the problem of stabilizing the force of the main upper blade to keep the vehicle from see-sawing out of control. I think of him as someone who made a contribution to stabilizing forces in both areas of his life.
2. Even at the end of his life, Arthur was curious, humble and full of life. A truly great man.
3. Re Arthur's Astrology: (11/3/05) Jupiter and Pluto in Gemini - creating a language for consciousness. Uranus in Capricorn - an inventor who created machinery to stabilize motion and invented a Theory of Process. Saturn in Aquarius trine Pluto in Gemini - creating a structure of thinking about Spiritual Science.
Conclusions:
1. Arthur's work is food for the open-minded soul.
2. His work as an inventor formed the basis for his later explorations - he made important contributions in both areas.
3. The documentaries on his invention of the helicopter are highly educational, both about the specific topic and invention in general.
